Description
Platinum dichloride is an important industrial catalyst, a gray-green or brown powder, that decomposes when heated to 581°C in a chlorine gas stream. Insoluble in water, soluble in ammonia, soluble in hot hydrochloric acid to form chloriplatin acid. Platinum dichloride reacts with alkali metal chloride to form complexes. It is prepared by heating spongy platinum with dry chlorine gas or heating chloroplatinic acid to 200 °C. It is used to prepare high-purity platinum salts, and is used as a catalyst for a variety of C-C bonds, C-O bonds and C-N bond bonding reactions.
