Description
Betaine, also known as trimethylamine ethyllactone, betain, and trimethylammonium ethyl salt, is a quaternary ammonium derivative of glycine, and is a class of nitrogen-methyl compounds or trimethyl internal salts formed after the hydrogen on the amino group of amino acids is replaced by methyl groups. Common ones are glycyl betaine, β-alanyl betaine, and prolyl betaine. Prismatic crystals or leaf-like crystals are obtained from ethanol, which have a sweet taste and are easy to deliquescent. The melting point is 293 °C, decomposes at 300 °C, soluble in water, methanol and ethanol, and insoluble in ether.

Betaine is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid. Anhydrous betaine is a new type of fine chemical, which can be widely used in food, medicine, daily chemical, printing and dyeing, chemical industry and other fields. Anhydrous betaine is a highly effective, high-quality nutritional additive. Pharmaceutical-grade betaine is used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, fruit juice industries, as well as dental materials, and betaine can also be used in the fermentation industry.
Production method
(1) Extraction method. The mother liquor of beet sugar production contains 12%-15% betaine, which can be directly recovered. Heat 300 parts of the mother liquor to 50 °C, add 80 parts of calcium chloride, stir for a certain time and filter while hot. The filtrate was acidified with hydrochloric acid, cooled to 20-30 °C for crystallization, and about 30 parts of betaine were separated and dried.
(2) Synthesis method. Obtained by quaternary ammonium of chloroacetic acid and trimethylamine in Chemicalbook, 195 parts of 48.6% chloroacetic acid aqueous solution were neutralized into sodium chloroacetate solution with 16% sodium hydroxide solution, and then mixed with 360 parts of 16.4% trimethylamine solution, ventilated at 50 °C for 1 h, and ventilated at 80 °C for 1 h. After the reactant is diluted, it is adsorbed by ionic resin (Dowex-50-8), and ammonia is eluted to obtain betaine solution. Then it is concentrated and crystallized by vacuum to obtain the finished product.
